Aging Population

Hoosiers are living longer and the number of older adults (aged 65 and older) is expected to dramatically increase in the coming years.
The lack of safe places to walk and bike is one of the main barriers older adults face for becoming and remaining physically active. Communities that follow Complete Streets design principles create safe places for older adults to walk or bike for transportation and exercise, helping them to achieve a healthier lifestyle.
This fact sheet from the National Complete Streets Coalition outlines the challenges and solutions to this problem.
